I love eye makeup. Palettes, pencils, cremes and powders, it doesn’t matter the format, I love to play with eye looks. That’s why, when Julep came out with a new creme to powder eyeshadow product in the October “New York Never Sleeps” box, I had to try every colour.

The product comes in a twist up thick pencil format with a smudger on one end. I like how the cap on the smudger is really secure, and feels unlikely to come off and get dirty in my makeup bag. Other reviews of the packaging have noted that sometimes the whole stick of product pops out while opening the cap. While I haven’t experienced this myself, it certainly bears considering both in your purchase decision and in how carefully you’re likely going to need to open the cap each time if you do make a purchase.

At initial launch, 6 colours were released. All are fairly wearable neutrals in line with the now discontinued Julep Eye Sheen liquid eyeshadow pots. All colours have a shimmer to them except for Stone which sets to a matte finish.

Swatches below (L-R): Champagne Shimmer, Bronze Shimmer, Taupe Shimmer, Taupe Shimmer, Stone, Plum Shimmer, Orchid Shimmer.

Julep describes the formula as an easily blendable creme that dries to a powder finish. I was skeptical at first given how difficult I’ve found some Julep makeup formulas in the past, but I think they’ve really fairly represented how the product works. The shadows glide on easily and without skipping, are very blendable (with your finger or the included smudger), and set like iron.

The swatches I’ve shared are all photographed after setting and without primer, and were a bit of a beast to remove. I used a regular makeup wipe (Balea brand) and had to change to using Benefit They’re Real Remover to get the product off fully.
